Every Instagram size, in one place.
The standard Instagram post size is 1080x1350 pixels, a 4:5 portrait ratio. Instagram also displays 1080x1440 (3:4), 1080x1080 (1:1) square, and 1080x566 (1.91:1) landscape in the feed, while stories and reels use 1080x1920 (9:16) and profile photos are shown at 320x320.
Every dimension below is 1080 pixels wide for a reason: Instagram scales anything larger back down, so exporting bigger adds file size and no quality.

The short version
- Export everything at 1080 pixels wide. Height is what changes between formats.
- Feed default is 4:5 portrait. Stories and reels are 9:16.
- The profile grid previews posts at 3:4, so a square post can look trimmed there.
- Instagram preserves your resolution when the ratio sits between 1.91:1 and 4:5.
Every Instagram image size
One table covers almost every question about Instagram dimensions. The width is 1080 pixels in every case that matters, and choosing a format really means choosing a height.

Which size should you actually use?
Portrait at 1080x1350 for almost everything in the feed. It occupies more of a phone screen than square, which means more of the screen is yours as someone scrolls past, and every tool handles it predictably.
Square at 1080x1080 still has a place when a design is symmetrical or when the same asset is going to LinkedIn, which recommends square as one of its two sizes. Landscape is the weakest choice for reach and is worth using only when the photograph genuinely demands the width.
Why does the profile grid crop my posts?
The profile grid previews posts taller than it used to, at a 3:4 ratio. A 4:5 post is shown nearly in full there, but a square post can appear trimmed in the grid even though the post itself is intact when opened.
This affects the first impression of a profile more than any individual post. If your grid is a big part of how people decide to follow you, design at 1080x1440 so the preview and the post match.
What about safe zones on stories and reels?
A story or reel is 1080x1920, but the top and bottom of that frame are covered by interface: the profile row and close button up top, the caption, audio label and action buttons along the bottom.
Keep anything that must be read inside the middle portion of the frame. Roughly 250 pixels of clearance at the top and 350 at the bottom is a workable margin, and it costs you nothing because the background still fills the whole screen.
Do carousels use different sizes?
Carousels use the same feed dimensions, with one extra rule that single images do not have: every slide is cropped to the aspect ratio of the first slide, and a carousel can hold at most 20 of them.
That rule is where most carousel problems come from, so it has a page of its own rather than a paragraph here.
